May Day Parade

Beginning in the early 1800s in England, May Day was the Chimney Sweeps Parade Day. Sweeps from all over the countryside came to town on their only day off to bring good luck and cheer. They came dressed in black ready to enjoy the festivities.

The tradition of the “Jack in the Green” began as maidens carrying bouquets of flowers. Over the years competition to have the greatest greenery display ensued. One year a local chimney sweep guild sponsored a man dressed in a huge green costume and the tradition of “Jack in the  Green” was born. This year Black Jack Chimney Sweep will be marching in the Kennebunk May Day Parade. Come enjoy the festivities and look for us in the parade at 1:30 pm.
